An original design, in one of the most celebrated types in the medieval Serbian series. Issued in conjunction with the elevation of the state from kingdom to empire in 1345/6, its design suggests divine sanction behind the move that was rife with political controversy at the time, given the subtle relationship with the ailing but still powerful Byzantine state-church establishment, as well as the broader geopolitical picture. Fine die-work by what is sometimes known as "engraver No. 2".
