Modest reverse but strong portrait and virtually full legend on this denarius of the rarest of the Twelve Caesars, and one of the "four emperors" of 69 AD. Otho's career was illustrious - it included provincial governorships, as well as roles as Nero's courtier and orgy organizer. Despite much criticism that can be leveled against him, he was apparently a ruler of some dignity, having eventually chosen to commit suicide and end further Roman bloodshed in a raging - and rare for this period in Roman history - civil war.
