Pleasing fine appearance for a scarce and historically important type, commemorating the triumph granted to Tiberius' heir apparent for the major victory over Germans at the Teutoburger forest ("Teutoburgiensis Saltis") in 15 AD, and the associated recovery of legionary standards lost there by Varus six years earlier. This victory and a subsequent successful expedition into the Netherlands gained Germanicus much respect as a military commander, but came at a heavy cost in equipment and manpower. This eventually lead Tiberius to renounce the conquest of Germany and recall the general to the capital, with the mitigating spectacle of a triumph granted in May of 17 AD - the event this coin type was wholly dedicated to when issued by his son Gaius (Caligula), some twenty years later.
