Devoid of human effigies or other celebratory regalia characteristic of his earlier issues, made out of reduced-quality silver (though that's not readily apparent on this specimen), the well-known legionary denarii of Mark Antony were a goal-oriented, emergency issue with a definite purpose: to pay for the army and navy in the period leading up to the fateful battle of Actium, Sept. 2, 31 BC. The coin design rather plainly states that much, but these monetary stimuli proved insufficient for Antony to prevail over Octavian, the future Augustus.
