The interesting reverse of this specific and scarcer denarius refers to the Sicilian Slave War, successfully conducted in 101 BC by the moneyer' ancestor, consul Manius Aquillius. He later moved on to Asian affairs and through his siding with Ariobarzanes I of Cappadocia and Nikomedes IV of Bithynia helped provoke the First Mithradatic War - only to fall victim to its escalation himself, in 88 BC.
