Another interesting reverse appropriate for Faustina, the mother of 13. She bore two sets of twins, and this coin is in reference to the second case, the birth of Antoninus and Commodus in 161 AD. Twins in general (and certainly their successful birth to begin with) were still surrounded by a certain mystique in Roman antiquity, and correspondingly, that event is specifically addressed here, as a "joyful era". But most of Faustina's children died young, including Antoninus, and the other twin - Commodus, the only surviving male child and eventual successor to the throne - marked an era that was anything but joyful.
