The practice of honoring family members, in particular wives, was rather common on Roman coinage. Sometimes this was a tribute to predeceased and consecrated ("divi") persons, and other times these were lifetime issues. Faustina died early in her husband's reign and was honored extensively. The present is a denarius in design, though not appearance; it appears to be a fourree, with the silver plating very heavily toned and blended into the underlying copper core that shows in several areas (mainly reverse).
