Popular type issued in conjunction with the other, Constantinopolis type. While meant to reassert the moral and cultural importance of Rome at a time when Constantinople was dedicated as the new capital of the Empire, it could not prevent the slide of the "eternal city" - along with all of the Western empire - into long-term oblivion, as the East gradually rose throughout the Middle Ages under what was to be known as the Byzantine Empire.
