A mysterious and attractive fractional issue. The very high-quality obverse rendition resembles style-wise some of those of man-headed bulls of Gela from the later Archaic period, but there are no other obvious similarities with those types. Additionally puzzling is the fact that Pan/Gelas appears in a (partially visible) incuse square, implying that side could also be considered the reverse. Finally, the forepart of the animal on the coin's other side is hard to decipher, despite a rather bold strike, given the oversized die that left the head off the flan.
