This type - issued both in silver and bronze - represents the final and most famous stage of his obsession, with the obverse showing his portrait in the image of Hercules with the lion-skin headdress. Commodus' mounting excesses, exemplified but not limited to those with his deadly Herculian club (prominently and ominously pictured here as well), were finally brought to an end by a successful palace coup shortly after this coin was minted.
