Attractive rendition of Herakles' first labor - the battle against the Nemean lion. Even though defeated (obviously), the hero's fierce opponent did get preferential or at least honorable treatment, as the lion's skin-turned-cloak accompanied Herakles on his subsequent adventures, and eventually became part of his standard iconography. Even scarcer than a similar type from neighboring Markianopolis.
