Although the head of a young Herakles in lion skin, and the tripod-lebes - a bronze three-legged stand supporting a bowl prominent in the cult of Apollo - each on their own are rather common devices on Greek coinage, their concurrent appearance is surprisingly rare, and probably notable only in the civic coinage from the Macedonian Philippi of the mid-4th century BC. Thus the attribution of this piece, which nevertheless isn't certain, as the partial reverse legend doesn't quite match the expected form, and the tripod variety also isn't characteristic of the published ones for this type.
