Situated at the "beginning of Italy's toe" - the eastern shore of Bruttium - this ancient Greek colony boasted a number of notable citizens. These ranged from its legendary founder, Herakles - shown here in a luxuriant looking lion-skin of somewhat serpentlike appearance - through the six-time Olympic wrestling champion Milo, to the famous mathematician and philosopher, Pythagoras. The bit uneven toning and ever so slight porosity render the scans somewhat less appealing than reality; however, legends are clear and complete, and fine detail is present.
