A city of great importance in Antiquity, Babylon's importance stretched into the Hellenistic era, and its swan song came in the half century following its planned surrender to Alexander the Great by the satrap Mazaios. During the ensuing period of self-rule by the able satrap and his successors, a series of Attic-standard silver with local design elements was issued, the present specimen an example of the flagship denomination in its earlier, full-weight version. |
