The famous Sasanian ruler whose long reign saw internal stabilization and many campaigns both East and West - though none so notorious as his celebrated defeat and capture of the Roman emperor Valerian I following the battle of Edessa in 260 AD. However, ultimately, this had no truly lasting effect, as the balance created by pressure from the Romans and Sasanian eastern foes was to continue in the centuries that followed. |
