Rare and interesting Archaic piece, unpublished in standard references. Apparently some similar ones were on occasion offered at auctions: Muenzen & Medaillon, list 570, #112, @ Sfr 375; Fairchild Family Trust Collection Sale (10 May 28, 2001; est. $250-300); Peus Auktion 368, April 25-28, 2001; lot 178. This locale is associated with the eponymous legendary founder of Troy (from which also derives the name of the nearby Straights of Dardanelles). Dardanos is also related to the Eastern cult of Kabeiroi, rarely encountered in Europe (however, see also our listed lots G2695 and G2708 for separate examples of these), and here taking the form of Dardanos and Aetion. Legend has it that Dardanos came from Samothrace and through his descendant Aeneas spread the cult to Rome, where for a while it had some high-profile followers, including Caesar's father-in-law.
