Fourth c. BC trident from Byzantion
From ancient times the city on the Bosporos was the bridge
between East and West, the gateway from one world to another

EUROPE
From the straights of Gibraltar to the straights of Taurica, European mints gave their valuable contribution to the art of ancient coinage. Some of the finest of them all came from Magna Graecia in today's Italy, even though their themes need not always be epic or sublime - as exemplified by this typical barley ear from the fertile Lucanian Metapontion.
ASIA and AFRICA
From its birthplace in western Asia Minor, coinage spread eastward as well as west, diversifying geographically, functionally and thematically. The luscious grapes and nagging fly on this classical stater from Cilician Soloi underscore one of the many simple links that have persisted for millenia between ancient times and the ever-advancing present.
