"Family portrait" of the early Macedonian dynasty. Basil apparently favored much more the elder Constantine, but his premature death left Leo as the eventual heir. Also of some note here is the anachronistic and puzzling use of the imperial Latin "AVGG" denotation following the Greek obverse legend.
